I accidentally own a lifetime of pre-WWII holey socks, a precious archive kept intact for 50 years by Louis Haase's widow, Estella Doerr Haase. Having been art-darned by me plus 23 talented menders --Sock Sisters--in 9 countries, they are now touring in a five-museum UK tour as part of the show "Human Natures The way we live in the world we made." As I write, they are halfway through, in Nottingham, with Derby and Manchester done and London and Norwich to come. It's a wonderful show. Everyone comes out with a fresh resolve to live lightly on the earth. And to darn.
